how to make heart-shaped crayons 02.12.2013

I’ll just come clean from the start, my cute mom is the one who came up with this idea and, of course, executed it to perfection. If I haven’t mentioned on here before, my mom is Martha Stewart’s clone. She can come up with and make anything you could imagine. So, I was not the least bit surprised to come home one afternoon after she was hanging out with my 2 year old son, to find that they had made these heart-shaped crayons together. She used all of my old crayons from when I was a kid, so it’s even sentimental that my son is now getting to play with a new and improved form of the very crayons I learned to color with. So, although I didn’t do these steps myself this time, they are SO easy, that I (the very non-Martha Stewart daughter) can walk us all through them!

All you need is:

1. a bunch of crayons

and

2. some silicone mini-heart baking cups. {If you’re local, go get them at Pryde’s Old Westport, if not, you can find them online}

And the steps are SO easy. Just chop or break up the crayons after you have removed the paper wrappers. Even better if you have a bunch of old crayons that are already in small pieces-this is a perfect way to reuse them!

Fill the mini heart-cups with your chopped crayons and bake in the oven at 200 degrees for about 5-7 minutes (no more than 10). It’s easiest to just watch them and when they appear melted, pull them out, let them cool and voila! Brand new heart-shaped crayons!

My son has been loving them because as he uses them, different colors of crayons keep popping up! Well, it’s all thanks to my mom, but I hope this gives you guys a great and EASY idea for a Valentine’s Day activity or little gift!

Happy Heart Day

– Morgan

Getting Crafty: dough tags 12.11.2012

Look who’s back and just in time for your holiday gift-wrapping! Our DIY genius, put together a unique and really fun way to add a sweet finishing touch to your gifts. And, as designers, of course, we appreciate the typographic appeal! We hope you love it as much as we do!! Thanks for sharing this with us, Laura!

With the holidays quickly approaching, it’s time to start thinking about how you’ll wrap all of those gifts! If you want to get crafty and personalize your tags, this is the perfect project for you! With a simple salt dough (I first saw here) you’ll be making custom tags for everyone on your list in no time.

Materials
-salt dough (1/4 c salt, 1/4 c water, 1/2 flour)
-cookie sheet
-stamp set
-ink pads
-small juice glass (or circle cookie cutter)
-wooden skewer
Step 1: Roll out the salt dough onto a floured surface, making the dough about 1/4″ thick.

Step 2: Using the juice glass as a cookie cutter, cut out several shapes and transfer them to a cookie sheet.

Step 3: Plan out what you want to stamp on each tag. Ink the stamp using whatever color you wish and stamp directly onto the unbaked dough. You won’t need to press very hard on this step, as the dough is soft. I used a combination of stamp sets for a variety of styles.

Step 4: With the wooden skewer make a hole in the top of each gift tag to later be used to tie onto each gift. Make sure to wiggle the wooden skewer around otherwise the dough will spread and leave you with too small of a hole. If you have a regular drinking straw around the house, that will work for this step as well.

Step 5: With an oven set to 325, bake the gift tags for about an hour, or until stiff. Once finished, let cool. Finally, wrap your gifts and get to gifting! I have a gift exchange to attend this year, which I thought the question mark stamp was perfect for!

We’ve found kraft paper wrapping at craft stores like Michael’s or Hobby Lobby or at stores like Target. They also have it at amazon.com and uline.com
      Hope this helps.

getting crafty: hex necklace DIY 11.13.2012

Well, she’s done it again! Our DIY genius, put together a super easy and darling tutorial for us today. We hope you enjoy this hex necklace!! Thanks as always, Laura, for sharing it with us!
With the holidays approaching quickly, I thought I’d show you how to make a simple gift for a friend, sister or co-worker. This project is so easy you just might find yourself making necklaces to match just about everything! And with the simple addition of something I found at the hardware store, the necklace becomes unique.
Materials: craft paint, paint brush, 3/8″ wooden beads (100), natural cotton string, #10 machine screw nut (10)
Step 1: Paint all of the beads with two coats of paint, making sure to get all sides. I used a wooden skewer for this to because it helps steady the beads. Let dry.

Step 2: String the necklace, by stringing 6 beads then 1 nut. Repeat this pattern until you’ve used all of your supplies. Using 100 beads will make your necklace about 30 inches long. If you want a longer or shorter necklace, you can adjust your supplies.

Step 3: Tie the cotton string in a double knot and show it off!

This is a lovely necklace. That was such a creative idea to use the hex nuts in the necklace. I love the colors too. I really want to try this soon.

getting crafty: painted candle holder 10.16.2012

OK, this project will make you want to host a dinner party just so you can do this fun DIY and then show it off! Thanks as always, Laura, for sharing it with us!
I’m preparing to host a dinner party this weekend and wanted to make something special for the table and with fall arriving, I thought about candles. I easily transformed a block of wood into a fun candle holder that can be personalized for any occasion!

Material: rectangle office label stickers, paint brush, six paint colors, wood block approximate size is 10 x 2 x 2 (found in the wood carving section of a craft store), power drill (not shown), 3/4″ drill bit (not shown)

First mark where you want the candles to go and drill the appropriate holes. You’ll want to choose a drill bit coresponding to the bottom of your candle to ensure a snug fit. For this example, a 3/4″ drill bit is shown. Make as many holes as you want.

Next, using a pencil loosely mark out 2″ sections across the block on one side. This will be where you will paint five sections to be revealed later.

Once marked, paint each space a different color. These sections don’t have to match up perfectly, so just paint an area larger than the sticker you will adhere later.

After the paint is dry, adhere one sticker per painted area as seen in the photo below. Press and smooth the sticker firmly to ensure good contact.

Then paint the entire wood block one color (gold shown here). Once the outer layer of paint is dry, gently peel away the stickers to reveal the painted areas underneath.

Grab your candles and you’re ready to help decorate your table!
