Behind the scenes of #AmpersandforNod 02.05.2015

The day the Spring 2015 Land of Nod products launched, we hosted an instagram takeover on @TheLandofNod where we shared some behind the scenes views into our design process! Just in case you missed it, we wanted to share them here, too!

The above shot of us working side by side is, in all actuality, how we frequently work. When we start a project, we always start off sketching, painting, drawing and experimenting with new mediums! We LOVE to play with color and always make sure to have fun while we “work”! We partner really closely and when we move to the computer, we even share files back and forth. We believe our designs are stronger because of our partnership!

Now, we are taking you back. like way back…and sharing our inspiration behind the designs we’ve created for Nod. Hint: It’s our own childhood. It was playful, bright and filled with lots of rainbows! Carrie on the left and Morgan on the right, sporting our favorite rainbow gear!

Hello from the @AmpersandStudio work space! We share a studio in the heart of the Kansas City Crossroads Art District. We design, blog and run our etsy shop from here. It’s our little home away from home. It’s also where we drink a LOT of coffee and make huge messes. In fact, it very rarely looks this clean. Our studio-mates can vouch for that (sorry, guys)!

How fun is this?!! in addition to designing products with Nod, we also had the privilege to redesign the shipping boxes and store bags! The boxes are patterned on the outside with a surprise burst of color on the inside! However, we never could’ve imagined that the boxes could be turned into the most darling cardboard village EVER! Those folks at Nod…just brilliant, we tell ya!

We have pretty much been bursting at the seems to reveal the products we designed exclusively for The Land of Nod!! So we hope you enjoyed the BIG REVEAL!!! Not to get all sentimental, but we can’t go without saying that we LOVE Nod and designing quality products to live in your homes one day has been the biggest dream come true!! The most exciting part of what we do is seeing these things in real rooms! So make sure to share your pictures with us! Hey Land of Nod, we think you are THE COOLEST!  – Morgan & Carrie  #AmpersandforNod

stylish start for 2013 01.07.2013

Have we mentioned how thrilled we are with our winter intern, Allie? Cause she’s pretty awesome! She first brought us some perfect jewelry ideas and now she’s here helping us bring in the new year with style…and lots of fun color and pattern, we might add! Allie rounded up the perfect planners and desk accessories to kick off the new year with a really fresh start! Bring it on 2013!

getting crafty: painted clipboard 09.11.2012

Lucky you guys,  Laura is here today to share yet another awesome idea in her “Getting Crafty” series with us! This DIY was even a finalist in the Design Sponge/Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape Contest but the full DIY has never been shown anywhere until right now! Aren’t we lucky? Enjoy!

For this month’s Getting Crafty column, I’ve come up with an easy way to add some interest to a plain clipboard. This design can be customized using different colors, or shapes and this project could easily given as a gift to your uber organized best friend. She’d love it! Keep reading for the full tutorial.

Materials: spray paint (white shown here), clipboard, trio of paints (shown here are red, teal and champagne), painters tape (1″ shown here), paint brush, hole punch
Step 1: Prepare your clipboard by taping over the hinge at the top. Once the metal piece is covered, go ahead and give the clipboard 2-3 coats of spray paint, making light and even coats as you go. Let the clipboard dry (overnight is best). While the clipboard is drying, get a piece of painters tape about 15 inches long. Using the hole punch, make evenly spaced punches through the tape to reveal a row of dots.
Step 2: Begin taping off the clipboard in a design that you want. It is best to plan this out before starting to paint. Another helpful tip is to paint one color at a time. I began with the teal, allowed to dry, then did the red and finished off with the champagne. This project does take time, but is very simple. For this example, I taped off the teal sections first, by making several diagonal lines across the clipboard. To add the dots, just adhere the tape in a straight line and paint directly over it.
Once all of your paint is dry, peel off the tape and enjoy your design!

goodbye summer, hello fall 09.04.2012

It’s hard to believe it’s time to say adios to summer. Labor Day always makes me a little bluesy so I’m trying to cheer up thinking about the fun that comes in autumn.

trend watch: faceting 03.27.2012

It’s hard to even call this a trend anymore, because it is by no means a short-lived fad. It seems that the regular or irregular angles of a faceted gem have taken form on everything from pendant lamps to trash cans! Surely you guys have seen a few of these things popping up, but don’t they make quite the clear statement when all gathered together?! We’ll take one of each, thank you very much.
