Painted Bird Shoes 03.13.2013

Painted Bird Shoes first caught my (Morgan’s) eye on the feet of one of my fashionable friends, Alison, who was in town visiting from California. I immediately needed to know where they were from so I could run home, get online and copy her cool Cali style! So, when Painted Bird asked Carrie & I  how we would wear their shoes, we were MORE than happy to romp around the city in our favorite new accessory! What’s not to love?  They come in so many unique color combinations and they couldn’t possibly be more comfortable. We’re always looking for something casual, but cuter than flip-flops. You know, something chic enough for dresses and skirts, but casual enough for cut-offs and jeans. Painted Bird just solved everything on our checklist– they are so versatile! Each shoe is artisan crafted & hand crocheted. They are seriously beautiful. Plus, Painted Bird was designed and created by two brilliant women (it’s worth reading their bio) needless to say, we are huge fans!

PS… did we happen to mention how cute the packaging is?  We just loved the surprise of getting shoes in a printed muslin bag. Just too perfect!

It just so happens, the entire identity was designed by the very friend we spoke of earlier, Alison! Speaking of insanely talented ladies, Alison is high on that list as well. Her studio out of sunny California, is called Fable Design. Make sure to check out Fable Design’s portfolio, full of great color,  one-of-a-kind graphic design and surface patterns!

Aren’t they gorgeous up close? You should really own a pair to see for yourself. Good luck picking your favorite color though, that’s all we have to say! We couldn’t even narrow down our choices to two for days! As you can see, Morgan went with the ankle strap and Carrie went without, but never fear, most colors are offered in both options. And if you’re wondering, they stay on without the strap (we wondered, so thought you might be too). They’ve been tested by us, and that’s a serious test including  running around after (very fast) toddler boys all day long!

One last thing we wanted to share with you all is  that a select few pairs of Painted Bird can be found at Anthropologie! Yep!! It appears some are currently sold out, but we found the Tidal Pool Ankle Wrap is still there!!!!

goodbye summer, hello fall 09.04.2012

It’s hard to believe it’s time to say adios to summer. Labor Day always makes me a little bluesy so I’m trying to cheer up thinking about the fun that comes in autumn.

big thanks for our new photo 08.20.2012

We were in desperate need of a current photo of the two of us in order to update our bio and to share with some of our new licensing contracts for the “Designers” portion of their websites (more on that soon)! It’s not easy to get a picture of two girls that both of them are ok with, so we enlisted some very talented friends, Emily Stansberry and Erin Cobb, to try and capture us! We were thrilled with the photos they took and we just wanted to say a big huge THANK YOU to both of you girls!!!!!!!!!!!! We’re giving you hugs (again) right now, through our computers. You are the best!!

Getting Crafty: Muffin Tin Frame 07.12.2012

We’re thrilled to be bringing you another brilliant Getting Crafty post by our girl, Laura Parke! We’re pretty obsessed with this great idea for displaying photos. This is a perfect and creative way to show off those first year month-by-month photos so many of us have taken. Love the idea of displaying them all at once so you can have a daily reminder of all those cute stages. As Laura points out, there are endless possibilities for this project. Thanks, Laura, for the idea!
Here’s Laura:
For this month’s Getting Crafty column, I’ve decided to repurpose a muffin tin into a photo frame. The lightweight muffin tin acts as the perfect photo frame to hang up or lean against a wall.

Materials: Muffin tin, 1 3/4″ paper punch, photos or prints to be trimmed, 12 craft paints in various colors, white spray paint suitable for metal, and a paint brush.

Step 1: Begin by spray painting the muffin tin, using sand paper if necessary to achieve a smooth surface. Since I used a very aged muffin tin, I required a little bit of sanding, but not much. I did about three light coats of spray paint on mine, waiting for it to dry between coats, to get full coverage.
Step 2: Plan out which paint color you want in each circle and start painting! This step will also take two to three coats to achieve full coverage. Be sure to let dry.
Step 3: Cut out the photos you want, using the paper punch and tape or glue them into place, leaving a colored border showing. For this example, I used Morgan’s son’s month by month photo series! Isn’t he adorable?? Thanks, Shaw, for helping me out!
That’s it! This project could also be used for elementary aged kids and be used from first grade through high school, or it could be used as a kids project to collect photos from vacations, summer activities, etc. The list goes on!

art & design: photo treatment 04.19.2012

We realize this is mostly for our graphic design geek readers (just like yours truly)….but have you noticed this type of photo treatment lately? Not sure if we would call it an actual trend, but we have been using it in our own designs and notice it popping up other places, too! In fact, our soon-to-be website juuuuust might hint at this treatment, as well! oh the suspense…
