Goodbye 2013, Hello 2014! 01.13.2014

As we move into 2014, we have been doing a lot of future-planning, goal-setting and plan-making for this coming year, but we feel like it’s really important to pause,  look back at the previous year and assess what worked and what didn’t. So we started writing down our biggest successes, most exciting moments and also the things that disappointed us or we’d count as failures, because frankly, each one of these things will teach us how we want to move forward into 2014. Its not all just list-making though, we are putting on our business women hats and crunching some serious numbers, as well.

We’re so thankful for the new relationships, friends and clients that have come from 2013. It’s truly been an incredible year for our business. We can’t go without recognizing that we are some of the lucky ones that are actually living our dream, doing exactly what we were meant to do! And a huge thank you to all of our Ampersand friends who stop by our little blog to see what we’re up to, we’re grateful for each and every one of you!

We’ve got big plans for 2014 and some of them have already started (ah…you know how we hate keeping secrets)! But before we move forward, let’s look back at 2013, want to come along on the journey with us? Let’s go:

Panera 2013 Holiday campaign 12.11.2013

We’re pretty proud of our city, that goes without saying, and we tend to think that Kansas City has a pretty talented group of creatives all living here right smack in the middle of the country! The Panera Bread Holiday 2013 campaign struck our eye and we loved discovering that it was designed right here in Kansas City by our famously talented, Willoughby Design! The mix of holiday critters, combined with pattern and letterpress-inspired typography, all in this unique color palette is leaving us speechless! Its nostalgic and new all at the same time! Is it wrong that we want to head over to Panera and say that our order is “to go” just so we can get one of these brown bags?

ampersand design studio for mane message 12.04.2013

We’ve been fans of Mane Message hair ties for a while now and we always admire how the color and pattern collections are put together, so when the opportunity arose for us to actually DESIGN the patterns on the ties, we were all over it!!! It was just icing on the cake that the owner of Mane Message, Olivia Hayward, happens to be the sweetest gal ever! She let us do our thing and design whatever we wanted….we, of course, had too many ideas, but we just kept returning to the  black, white and gold collection. What can we say, even the rainbow-lovers love a good classic combo from time to time! This collaboration was just a little match made in heaven. Such a pleasure to work with Olivia! We hope you all love our exclusive collection!
From top to bottom: Black Glitter Hair Tie // Ampersand Stripe Print Hair Tie // Black Solid Hair Tie // Confetti Print Hair Tie // Gold Glitter Hair Tie // Geometric Print Hair Tie. That’s two glitter hair ties, one solid color hair tie and three print hair ties for $12.50!
PS – It goes without saying that these would be the most perfect stocking stuffer, right? We love that you get a little glitz, a classic black and then some fun exclusive patterns all in one package!
Find them in our shop now!
If you’d like to carry these in your own shop, contact us here for wholesale info: hello@ampersanddesignstudio.com.

Land of Nod + Ampersand Design Studio Holiday Party 11.25.2013

We are officially in the holiday spirit over here! We had the amazing opportunity to kick of the season in style on Thursday when we co-hosted a party and trunk show with The Land of Nod! We have long been in love with everything Nod and jumped at the chance to deck our studio out with their holiday decor and have a fun shindig. We had a blast catching up with our blogging friends! What made the evening even more fun was that at the same time that our event was happening here in Kansas City, eight other parties were also taking place across the country hosted by many of our favorite bloggers. Be sure to hop over to their blogs for more party pics and holiday inspiration. The other hosts were: Joni Lay of Lay Baby Lay in Atlanta // Kirsten Grove of Simply Grove in Boise // Chassity Evans of Look Linger Love in Charleston // Darcy Troutman of No Monsters in My Bed and Rebecca + Suzanne of A Feteful Lifein D.C. // Kelly Lanza of Studio DIY and The Honest Company in Los Angeles // Raechel Meyers of Finding My Feet in Nashville // Kirsten Krason of 6th Street Design School and Small Fry Blog in Salt Lake City/ Provo // Cristin Bisbee Priest of Simplified Bee, Michaela Warner of Michaela Noelle Design, and Mary Heffernin, at her business, The Makery in San Francisco. Everyone used the hashtag, #nodevents to instagram, tweet and Facebook their events so we were able to feel like we were party-hopping our way across the country.

We loved transforming our space into a cheerful wintery wonderland and the only difficult thing was deciding which Land of Nod items we wanted to use. We threw in some Christmas trees in white, hot pink and gold metallic and several strings of lights overhead for good measure. We thought they looked quite nice decked out with Nod ornaments, tree skirts and a doily decals. We also decided we needed a mantle to hang our stockings on and had a blast painting one to do the job. Since we spend so much of our time on the computer, it was a nice change of pace to do some painting and crafting. We pulled out the glitter, yarn and paintbrushes and got all DIY.

Everyone at the party got to get in on the crafting, too, at a table all set up with Crepe paper flower kits to put together.

Our guests were thrilled to find out that there were a bunch of awesome giveaways to be had. A teepee, a Nod chair, a pig rocker, an intergalactic playset and two animal sleeping bags were up for grabs to name just a few, and every guest got to go home with a darling tote filled with a set of 12 days of Christmas ornaments. Our awesome Land of Nod representative, Jason (who we decided is our new bestie), did the honors of pulling the lucky winners from a box.

While we did not enter ourselves in the drawing, we each got to decorate (and keep, yay!) cottage dollhouses. Each party host got to personalize their dollhouse however they wanted and post photos of them at #noddollhouse. Some people were so creative with theirs!

Of course we had some treats & drinks! Doughnut holes, French macarons from Au Bon Macaron and some herb and cheese gougeres from a brand new bakery in downtown Kansas City, called Sasha’s Baking Co! And really, what’s a party without a photo booth to capture the memories? We glitzed ours out in dots made from pink, gold glitter and metallic paper in front of hot pink wrapping paper.

We want to send a million thanks to our super-talented friends, Emily and Corie (below) of Peep Toe Photography (how cute are they?!) for being our photographers for the night. We love how they captured all the fun of the event!

Now, the best part is that we get to bring all of you in on the action with a special 15% off promo code to The Land of Nod! Just use AMPGALS at checkout to receive your discount through November 27th. Happy shopping!!!!

We can’t go without thanking our studio mates, Wirken Photography, for being so patient us turning the studio into an early holiday wonderland!

Biggest THANK YOU to The Land of Nod, for helping us host the best party ever!!!! Let’s do it again sometime, shall we?!

The Honest Co. 04.10.2013

We had the pleasure of meeting some of the great people at The Honest Co. at Alt Summit this January, including the darling founder, Jessica Alba! We had already heard of the great mission behind Honest’s products, but had yet to sample them ourselves. We came home from Alt excited to try out everything Honest had to offer since it is perfectly in line with what we look for but can’t find in cleaning products and baby gear: eco-friendly, stylish, safe, scary-chemical-free and reasonably priced. It’s a dream brand for us. And the best part of all: for every product purchased, The Honest Company donates product, money, time, and effort to addressing critical health & social issues affecting children and families. Love it! The gals at Honest were sweet enough to give us some gift cards to go to town on the Honest website, and that we did…

Morgan was immediately drawn to the Honest diapers because other brands were causing a rash on her little guy’s legs. Knowing that these were non-toxic, plant-based and included no “scary stuff” made them an easy pick. The only hard part was choosing from the adorable patterns. She went with dinos, and now naming the dinosaurs by their colors is a favorite changing time ritual…bonus.

We both went straight for the fruit and veggie wash also. It’s not always an option to buy organic, but we aren’t fans of feeding anything that could have pesticides or other chemicals on it to our little ones. Voila! This spray is exactly what we needed. It removes toxic pesticide & chemical residues, waxes, dirt, and other garbage no one wants to consume. It feels great to know we are getting that stuff off of our produce with a quick spray and rinse.

Really, we couldn’t be happier about discovering a company that stands for the same things we do and that doesn’t sacrifice style in the process. How cute is their packaging? We’re in love!

The products we sampled: Disposable Diapers in Dinosaurs Pattern,  4-Pack of Travel Wipes,  Fruit & Veggie Wash,  Essentials Sample Collection, Stain Remover
