Holiday Pop-up Shop 11.12.2014

We are SOOO excited to kick off the holiday season with a little Pop-up shop in our own studio! We got to thinking it would be fun to pull together a few of our favorite local Kansas City makers to have a little shopping event, and before we knew it, we had what we think is a pretty killer group assembled. There are home goods, fine art prints, jewelry, leather goods, T-shirts, women’s wear, ceramics, accessories, and the list goes on and on! Plus, we will even have a fun Photo Booth by the talented One Sparrow Creative to capture some memories of the night! There will be some snacks and drinks to get you in the shopping mood, and what’s better than getting some shopping done early before madness of the holidays truly begins! We hope you can join us! Here’s a look at the fabulous vendors who will be there (scroll down for links to their websites):

1. Happy Habitat // 2. Jaime Rovenstine // 3. Janesko // 4. Prairie Goods // 5. Ampersand Design Studio // 6. Nickel & Suede // 7. Convivial Production // 8. Ocean and Sea // 9. Maddy Nash // 10. Alicia Janesko

Introducing the Kansas City Baseball Tee! 10.16.2014

WOOOOHOOO! We are so proud of Kansas City! Whether you were a baseball fan before or not, you are NOW — are we right?!!! The energy in this city is electric right now! We’ve been waiting 29 years for our Royals to head back to the World Series and we can’t wait to show our pride in the coming weeks!

We couldn’t resist, and after the release of our Kansas City totes, we’ve been wanting to put our hand-painted lettering on tee shirts also. Since, we wanted to make these for ourselves to wear, we thought you guys might want to wear them, too.

They will be hot off the presses and ready to pick up at our studio a week from today, Thursday Oct. 23rd from 10 – 4 or we can ship them out Wednesday. Head to the shop to get yours.

Be sure to celebrate along with us and post pics of your new tee at #ampersandheartskc and copy us @ampersanstudio

GO ROYALS! GO KC!

PATRICK DOOLEY // 2014 AIGA KANSAS CITY FELLOW AWARD 09.09.2014

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a professor that makes such a lasting impression on your life, but both of us just happen to be in that category. While attending design school at The University of Kansas, we had the pleasure of having Professor Patrick Dooley starting in our early design years. Starting with early classes, he taught us the very basic foundations of typography and graphic design and let us discover what successful visual communication really meant. His dry sense of humor, calm demeanor (even while sometimes delivering harsh criticism), and endless passion for passing on his knowledge, while at the same time letting each student’s design sense show through, was truly one of a kind. His classes made us fall in love with design!! We owe much of our success in the design industry to what we learned from Patrick. We’d like to personally thank him for all he has done and we are thrilled to help share this news!!

Drumroll please…AIGA Kansas City announced that Professor Patrick Dooley is the winner of the 2014 Fellow Award for the Kansas City chapter of AIGA, the professional association for design. The award will be presented at the AIGA KC Awards Gala & Exhibition on September 20 in Kansas City.

With more than two decades at the University of Kansas, Mr. Dooley, professor in the Department of Design | School of Architecture, Design & Planning, has influenced legions of designers practicing in Kansas City and beyond. Best known for his love of book design and attention to typography, Dooley has several works in the National Design Archives of AIGA. Dooley’s  awards number more than 80, with work recognized by the New York Type Directors Club, Communication Arts Magazine, Print Magazine, Los Angeles Art Directors to name a few.

Awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholar fellowship in 2003, Dooley lectured at the Fachhochschule in Trier, Germany. A Study Abroad program has resulted with more than 80 international scholars from Kansas or Germany to date.

Dooley received a 2008 Sappi Ideas that Matter grant and, along with University of Kansas students,  developed a print campaign benefitting the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a partnership between the Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association.

A bit about the AIGA Fellow Award: The Fellow award recognizes a designer with 15 years or more experience who has made a significant contribution to raising the standards of excellence in practice and conduct within the local and regional design community, as well as in the AIGA chapter. The areas of education, writing, leadership and reputation – as well as the practice of design – are given equal consideration.

A bit about AIGA Kansas City: AIGA KC strives to inspire talent, engage thinking and connect designers through events, an annual awards program, and partnership in Kansas City Design Week. More than 500 strong, AIGA KC is in its 25th year as a chapter of a national organization celebrating its centennial.

If you are local and would like to celebrate the awesomeness that is Professor Patrick Dooley, make sure you attend the AIGA KC Awards Gala & Exhibition on September 20 in Kansas City!

West Elm Grand opening party 08.21.2014

Last night was the Grand Opening preview party for our brand new West Elm store on the Country Club Plaza so it was the perfect opportunity to go visit our products on the West Elm shelves!!! It was such a high to see our totes and new 8×10 ampersands sitting with the other local products in one of our all-time favorite stores!

Plus, the party itself was so fun and West Elm was PACKED with people checking out the new digs! Also, we already love West Elm for partnering with local makers, but love them even more for donating a portion of the night’s profits to Bridging the Gap, an awesome local KC environmental non-profit. Judging by the crazy-long check-out lines all night, they were surely able to donate a lot of money to this great cause. There was also awesome music and a Smilebooth set up for fun pics!

It was such a fun night of yummy food by Howard’s Organic Fare and Vegetable Patch and cocktails from The Campground

It was so great to catch up with one of our favorite KC bloggers, Megan of Chasing Davies! How cute is she for wearing our tote to the opening?! Be sure to go check out her blog post to see how she styled the Crossroads bag in the most darling way!

Our products were in the best company on the local display! So many amazing makers. Cute products below from Convivial Production, Ruff House Art and Tad Carpenter Creative.

Thanks West Elm, for a great night and for including us as a part of West Elm Local!
