World Cancer Day

For some reason, we have ended up sort of separating our personal life with our Ampersand life, but the truth is, in our real world, personal life and business life is all so very intertwined. For that reason, it hasn't felt quite right that I haven’t shared a fairly major life update here and in honor of World Cancer Day (today), I'd like to.This is Morgan writing, by the way. Usually Carrie and I are here together, but today, it’s just me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As some of you might already know, in 2019 I was diagnosed with breast cancer, (Stage 0, DCIS to be exact). I opted to go through a double mastectomy in hopes of never hearing the word "cancer" again....unfortunately, at the end of 2021, I found a new lump in my chest. I got the dreaded phone call AGAIN, that it was a cancerous tumor, and unfortunately, this time, it had become invasive. There are no words to describe the flood of emotions and fear that filled my entire body when I got that call, but...the only direction to go is FORWARD!

The fact is that I caught my cancer, both times, very early - Stage 0 and Stage 1, thanks to early detection from screening. This means that it's treatable and curable, and, although treatment isn't easy, it's POSSIBLE and I get to be here for a very long time! I just hope my story can encourage even one other woman to go get that mammogram! There is really no excuse that justifies not making your health a priority! It can be the difference between an early stage cancer and a much later stage.

I'm now in the middle of my treatment and it's still hard to wrap my mind around the fact that I'm going through this again. But in honor of World Cancer Day, I (and the whole Ampersand crew) wanted to find some way to help others affected by cancer....whether it's you or a loved one, whether you're in the middle of the battle or whether you're a survivor, and to the caregivers, we want to pay it forward!

A new friend I met through our similar diagnoses sent me a quote one day that simply read, "one day at a time", and it's become my mantra. For women who have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, or have a loved one going through it, I understand how hard it is and I hope this mantra can help you get through it, too.
